Alaska Map Cruise RSS quote-openIn 1513, Piri Reis, an admiral in the Turkish Navy, drew a map outlining the western coast of Africa, eastern coast of South America, and the northern coast of Antarctica. This map was discovered in 1929, haggard on a part of gazelle hide. Now, judgment a map that old is remarkable indeed, but judgment one so full became a bit of a puzzle.Being an admiral in the navy, Piri Reis was able to pursue his passion; cartography, but that does not clarify how he was able to map the Glacial coast with such detail. Especially since the shoreline was enclosed in ice at that time and had been for ages!
